Detailed Solution

'Subsidiary Alliance' was formulated by Lord Wellesley
Lord Wellesley created a subsidiary alliance under which British security was granted to Indian kingdoms in exchange for their agreement to support British forces on their territory and at their own expense. It involved the subsequent steps:
  • The East India Company gave Indian states military support by forming an alliance.
  • The Company forced the signatory Indian states to agree to the permanent stationing of the British military and a Resident.
  • If the states couldn't afford the annual fees, the native leaders of the Indian states were obliged to give up a portion of their land. For instance, the Nawab of Awadh was compelled to cede more than half of his land to the Company in 1801.
