First, Europe's demand for commercial crops such as sugar, jute, cotton, and wheat increased during the nineteenth century. So, the British government encouraged the production of these commercial crops in India. Secondly, colonial rulers thought of forests as wilderness with no useful purpose. They wanted to leverage the lands by turning them into cultivated lands that could help them earn profits and revenue, which would also improve the state's income.
