Detailed Solution
Electrolysis can be used to remove metals with a high degree of reactivity. The metals have stable oxides and other electrically removable compounds, as well as highly reactive forms.
Ores that are located in the earth's crust are used to extract metals. The electrolysis technique allows for the extraction of metals with a high degree of reactivity. These metals react with their environment fast, forming stable oxides and other compounds that must be reduced to metal using a lot of electric current.
The metals that can be extracted electrolytically are those at the top of the reactivity series, such as sodium, potassium, calcium, lithium, magnesium, and aluminium.
Let's see how the electrolysis technique is used to extract aluminium:
Bauxite is the mineral of aluminium. The aluminium may then be recovered from the aluminium oxide, which is created when the bauxite is refined. In order for the aluminium oxide to conduct electricity, its ions must be free to move. Aluminum oxide has a melting point that is very high. Aluminum ions that are positively charged get electrons from the cathode and from molten aluminium throughout the electrolysis process, whereas oxide ions that are negatively charged lose electrons at the anode and produce oxygen molecules.
Carbon dioxide bubbles off once the oxygen and carbon in the electrodes react. The positive electrodes must consequently be changed regularly since they lose carbon over time. This raises the price of the procedure.
Hence, the correct option is (D).
