Sulabh International is a non-governmental organisation founded in 1970. It primarily focuses on addressing problems of sanitation faced by low-caste and low-income people in India. The issue of sanitation was very grave when the organisation was first founded. It is primarily the rural and urban poor who are faced with a lack of sanitation facilities. To address this issue, Sulabh International is contracted by municipal and other local authorities to construct the much-needed toilet blocks. While the facility is thus set up using government funds and land provided by local authorities, maintenance cost is sometimes financed through user charges.
