Sultans were advised that slaves were better than sons to consolidate the empire.
For the consolidation of the Sultanate, governors and administrators were needed to look after such a vast kingdom. So, rather than appointing aristocrats and chieftains as governors, the early Sultans of the Sultanate, especially Iltutmish, were more inclined towards their slaves and purchased them for military services. These enslaved people were called Bandagan in Persian and were trained to take up some of the most important political offices in the kingdom.
