Detailed Solution

Let three arithmetic means between a and b be a1, a2, a3. Then  a, a1, a2, a3, b are in A.P.

Let common difference of this A.P. be d. Then

d=14(ba)a1=a+b=14(3a+b)a2=a+2d=12(a+b)a3=a+3d=14(a+3b)

If A1, A2, A3 are arithmetic means between 1/a and 1/b, then

A1=143a+1b=a+3b4abA2=121a+1b=a+b2ab

A3=141a+3b=3a+b4ab

Now, 164(3a+b)(a+b)(a+3b)=152

and 164(ab)3(a+3b)(a+b)(3a+b)=518

Thus, (ab)3=15/25/18=27

ab=3
