Suppose a plant has tuberous roots and rhizomes both as underground structures. How can you distinguish a root from rhizome?

Some plants have rhizome and roots as underground structures but roots  differ from rhizomes in having no scale leaves. A rhizome is a modified subterranean stem of a plant that is usually found underground. Stem possess nodes, internodes, buds and scale leaves where as roots lack nodes, internodes and scale leaves.
