Detailed Solution

Surat in Gujarat was the emporium of Western trade during the Mughal period. Surat in Gujarat, along with Cambay and Ahmedabad, was the epicentre of western business during the Mughal period. Surat was a hub for trade with West Asia via the Gulf of Ormuz. Surat is also known as the "Gateway to Mecca" because of the enormous number of pilgrim ships that leave from there. The city was cosmopolitan, with people of many castes and creeds living there. Surat was home to Portuguese, Dutch, and English manufacturing and warehouses in the seventeenth century. According to Ovington, an English historian who wrote an account of the port in 1689, a hundred ships from various countries may be anchored in the harbour at any given moment. Surat fabrics were well-known for their gold lace borders and were widely distributed throughout West Asia, Africa, and Europe.
