Towards the end of the seventeenth century, Surat started to fall. The hub of western trade during the Mughal era was Surat in Gujarat, along with Cambay. A number of Europeans and Arabs frequented Surat for business purposes, resulting in a cosmopolitan culture in the city. This was caused by a number of things, including the fall of the Mughal Empire's markets and production, Portuguese dominance of the sea lanes, and rivalry from Bombay (modern-day Mumbai), where the English East India Company moved its headquarters in 1668.
