Detailed Solution

Surat was an important trading port along with Cambay. During the Mughal Empire, Surat in Gujarat and Cambay (today's Khambhat) served as the centres of western trade. Through the Gulf of Ormuz, trade with West Asia reached Surat. Surat has frequently been referred to as the entrance to Mecca due to the large number of pilgrim ships that depart from here. In the cosmopolitan metropolis, there were residents of all castes and religions. In Surat, throughout the seventeenth century, industries and warehouses were developed by the English, Dutch, and Portuguese. According to the English historian Ovington, who wrote about the harbour in 1689, an average of 100 ships from different countries could be found docked at the port at any given time.
