Brahmo Samaj was founded by Ram Mohan Roy. Swami Dayanand Saraswati, who supported widow remarriage, founded the reform organisation Arya Samaj on April 10, 1875, in Bombay. By the second half of the nineteenth century, the movement in favour of widow remarriage had spread throughout the country. Dayanand Saraswati was dedicated to fighting the evils of child marriage and the caste system. He also fought against the concept of idol worship and advocated for equal rights for men and women in all aspects of life. Even though many reformers supported the widow remarriage act, the number of widows who married was very low. Conservative groups continued to resist the new law because widow remarriage was not widely accepted in society.
