Tatia Tope supported Rani Lakshmibai and Nana Saheb in the revolt of 1857.
One of the noteworthy commanders of the 1857 Indian Revolt was Tatia Tope. He was born to a Marathi Deshastha Brahmin family as Ramachandra Panduranga and adopted the title Tope, which means commanding officer. He commanded an army of Indian men and led them in the battle against the British. He was a fervent supporter of Nana Sahib of Bithur and kept up the struggle for him even after the British soldiers made Nana flee. He also assisted Rani Lakshmi of Jhansi in holding onto Gwalior.
