The Tawa is a river in the Mahadeo Hills of the Chhindwara district. It flows by the Betul river and finally joins the Narmada River in Hoshangabad. The Tawa dam began to be built on the Tawa River in 1958 and was completed in 1978. Due to the construction, a larger area of forest and agricultural land of the respective forest dwellers was submerged. They were suddenly replaced with nowhere to go. They started settling around Tawa reservoir and practised fishing for their livelihood. But it generated insufficient income for them to sustain their life. After this, the Tawa Matsya Sangh, an organisation was established that helped these forest dwellers to get their rights. Consequently, in 1996, the fishing rights for the reservoir were granted to the people.
