Tawa Matsya Sangh was started in Madhya Pradesh.
Tawa Matsya Sangh is a union of fisherman cooperatives. It is an organisation that fights for the rights of displaced forest inhabitants in Madhya Pradesh's Satpura forest. The government granted private contractors fishing rights in the Tawa reservoir in 1994. These contractors drove out the locals to obtain inexpensive labour from elsewhere. By sending in hoodlums, the contractors began to intimidate the locals, who refused to leave. The peasants banded together and formed an association to preserve their rights. The TMS's success has been aided by widespread local engagement.
