Bidis, an indigenous leaf-rolled cigarette made from coarse uncured tobacco and strung with a colourful string at one end, is produced from tendu leaves.
Tendu (Diospyros melanoxylon) leaves make great wraps, and this leaf is partially responsible for the beedi's popularity. The leaves are plentiful soon after the tobacco crop is cured and are therefore prepared for use in the production of beedi.
