In the hilly areas, people practise terrace farming to grow crops, where lands on hill slopes are converted into flat plots in step-like structures. The sides of the plots are raised to retain water. The water remains stagnant by the raised sides of the plots and thus is best for cultivating rice, as the cultivation of rice requires lots of water. One example can be seen in the Phek district of Nagaland. The residents of Chizami village, which is located in the district, practice terrace farming. They own their lands but also work collectively in each other's fields.
