Thalassemia is a quantitative problem of synthesising too few globin molecules while sickle cell anaemia is a qualitative problem of synthesising an incorrectly functioning globin.

Thalassemia is controlled by two closely linked genes HBA1 and HBA2 on chromosome 16.

Alpha thalassemia affects the production of alpha globin chain and beta thalassemia affects the production of beta globin chain. Sickle cell anaemia affects only beta chain.
