Detailed Solution

The Vernacular Press Act was passed by Lord Lytton in 1878 in order to clamp down and censor the native press. Lord Lytton passed the Vernacular Press Act. He was the viceroy of India. This act was passed in British India so as to refrain from the Indian language press in 1878. The native press was clamped down and censored through the Vernacular Press Act. It was all done because the Britishers wanted the newspaper to write for them and favour them, rather than the Indian language. They refrained from the news-press to print the news in the Indian language and were forced to publish in British and Non-Indian languages. Britishers provided support to the newspaper only if it was not published in Indian Language.
