The President appoints the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister is the most important political figure in the country. However, the Prime Minister is not chosen in a direct election. The President appoints the Prime Minister. The President, however, is not permitted to appoint anybody they like. Instead, the President picks the Prime Minister from among the leaders of the parties with the majority of seats in the Lok Sabha. If no party or coalition obtains a majority, the President chooses the candidate who has the best chance of winning support from a majority. The prime minister's term is not predetermined. He is in office as long as he is the leader of the coalition or party with the most support.
