The Scheduled Castes are commonly known as Dalits. The Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes are counted separately in the Indian Census. Numerous castes or tribes whose names are included in an official Schedule are included in both of these major categories. Hence, their name begins with 'Scheduled'. Those who were formerly considered to be 'outcastes' in the Hindu social order and were subject to marginalisation and untouchability are included in the Scheduled Castes, often known as Dalits. The Scheduled Castes made up 16.2% of the country's population in 2001. The scheduled castes combined many small castes to form a bigger caste group called Dalits. It was done to gain representation and shed the stigma of the previous lower caste/untouchable caste.
