The jute bag producers of Bengal were affected by the Great Depression. Bengal was a big producer of jute. Raw jute was utilised for making gunny bags that accounted for export to other countries. As the Great Depression approached, the export of gunny bags was affected. The prices of these bags slumped by 60%. The peasants and merchants involved in the jute trade were highly affected. The peasants took loans for the production of raw jute. When the prices declined, the peasants faced a loss of income. They became indebted and could not pay revenue.
