Dutch East India Company, a trading company, founded in the Republic of the Netherland in 1602, protects state trade in the Indian Ocean and the Netherlands. For most of the 17th century, the company prospered as a tool for a powerful Dutch trading empire in the East Indies (now Indonesia). They disbanded in 1799. The Portuguese were the first European sea adventurers on the scene, beginning in 1415 AD on a bold voyage along the African coast.
