The Dutch established a settlement at Masulipatnam in Andhra Pradesh. The settlement of Masulipatnam, sometimes known as Machilipatnam, lies on the delta of the Krishna river. During the seventeenth century, it was a center of frantic activity. The Dutch and English East India Companies attempted to seize Masulipatnam as it grew into the largest port on the Andhra coast. At Masulipatnam, the fort was built by the Dutch. The Qutb Shahi kings of Golconda enacted royal monopolies on the sale of textiles, spices, and other items to prevent commerce from becoming completely under the control of the numerous East India companies. The strong struggle between the Golconda nobility, Persian traders, Telugu Komati Chettis, and European traders helped to make the city well-known and prosperous.
