Detailed Solution

The Church extracted its share of taxes called tithes from the peasants in France. The society of pre-revolution France was divided into three estates. The First Estate included all the members of the Catholic clergy. The clergy levied a tax called a tithe, a compulsory donation to the Church. One-tenth of the agricultural produce or income was given as tithe. Apart from the privilege of collecting taxes, they were also exempted from paying taxes to the state, contributing to their vast wealth. All their privileges and tithes were banned, and all the lands owned were confiscated when the National Assembly passed a decree on 4 August 1789 to abolish the feudal system.
