General Dyer fired upon the innocent people who gathered in Jallianwala Baugh.
Additionally, General Dyer wished to convey the idea that adherence to British colonial rule in India would be upheld. The Jallianwala Bagh Massacre occurred when British soldiers opened fire on a sizable gathering of unarmed Indians in Amritsar, killing several hundred and injuring many more. Thousands of people gathered at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar on April 13, 1919. General Dyer arrived with armed soldiers and ordered them to open fire mercilessly on the uninformed crowd.
