The Poona Pact gave the Depressed Classes reserved seats in the legislative councils.
The Poona Pact gave the Dalits much-needed reservations in the provincial and central legislative councils. In addition, it claimed to provide a fair representation to them in public services and the allotment of educational grants for their upliftment. The Pact was negotiated between Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. B. R. Ambedkar in September 1932. The background for this Pact was when the British government granted Ambedkar's desire for a separate electorate, but Gandhi started a fast unto death in protest. Finally, after negotiations, they agreed on the Poona Pact settlement.
