One of the years of severe economic suffering in Europe was 1848. Population growth was extraordinarily rapid throughout Europe in the first half of the nineteenth century. In the majority of countries, there were more job applicants than there were jobs. People moved to the cities from rural areas to live in overcrowded slums. Due to rising food prices or a poor harvest year, pauperism was widely prevalent in towns and countries. Food shortages and rampant unemployment forced Paris's population onto the streets.
