The famines in India did not affect the sale of Banarasi or Baluchari sarees. Some weavers wove coarse cloth, while others wove finer varieties. The coarser cloth was purchased by the poor, and its demand fluctuated dramatically. During bad harvests and famines, when the rural poor had little to eat, and their cash income vanished, they could not purchase cloth. Demand for finer varieties purchased by the wealthy was more stable. As a result, famines did not affect the sale of Banarasi or Baluchari sarees because wealthy people brought them.
