The Portuguese, in the mid-16th century, introduced the printing press in Goa.
Portuguese missionaries brought the printing press to Goa for the first time. Jesuit priests printed several tracts and learned Konkani. By 1674, there were roughly 50 books printed in the Kanara and Konkani languages. The first Tamil book was produced in Cochin in 1579 by Catholic priests, while the first Malayalam book was printed there in 1713. Despite the English East India Company starting to import presses in the late seventeenth century, the English language press did not take off in India until very late.
