The Chauri Chaura incident resulted in Gandhiji calling off the Non-Cooperation Movement.
This incident occurred on February 4, 1922, at Chauri Chaura in the Gorakhpur district of the United Provinces (current-day Uttar Pradesh) in British India, when police opened fire on a large crowd of demonstrators taking part in the Non-Cooperation movement. All the people inside a police station were killed when protesters attacked and fired it in retribution. Thus, twenty-two police officers and three civilians were killed in the event. This incident led to Mahatma Gandhi vehemently opposing the violence, halting the national Non-Cooperation Movement on February 12, 1922. However, the British colonial authorities hanged 19 demonstrators and imprisoned 14 others for life.
