The British made Dietrich Brandis the first general inspector of forests in India. The British Government in India requested him to come and exchange ideas on how to conserve India's forests while meeting the country's raw material needs. Consequently, he offered some critical recommendations that transformed India's forest management. Brandis came up with a new forest rule. Brandis helped develop the Indian Forest Act of 1865 and formed the Indian Forest Service in 1864. He founded the Imperial Forest Research Institute in Dehradun in 1906. He pioneered a novel scientific or commercial forestry system.
