Detailed Solution

The Khilafat movement coincided with the Non-Cooperation Movement.
The Turkish Sultan, or Khalifa, was subjected to a harsh treaty by the British in 1920. Many were incensed, similar to their sentiment about the Jallianwala massacre. Additionally, Indian Muslims were desirous for the Khalifa to maintain sovereignty over Muslim holy sites throughout the former Ottoman Empire. Mohammad Ali and Shaukat Ali, the leaders of the Khilafat uprising, now desired to start a full-fledged Non-Cooperation Movement. Gandhiji endorsed their request and urged Congress to raise awareness of the Khilafat injustice, the Jallianwala slaughter, and the desire for swaraj. From 1921–1922, the Non-Cooperation Movement grew in popularity. Numerous students abandoned institutions and universities under government rule.
