The Swadeshi movement gained traction in the first decade of the twentieth century. Nationalists organised a boycott of foreign clothing. Industrial organisations banded together to protect their collective interests, putting pressure on the government to increase tariff protection and make other concessions. Since 1906, when Chinese and Japanese mills flooded the Chinese market, Indian yarn exports to China had declined. As a result, Indian industrialists began shifting from yarn to cloth production. Between 1900 and 1912, cotton piece-goods production in India more than doubled.
