The reservation of forests was the final straw in forcing the people of Bastar to rebel.
The people of Bastar were highly concerned when the colonial authorities sought to reserve two-thirds of the forest in 1905 and to halt shifting farming, hunting, and gathering of forest produce. On the condition that they cut, transported, and prevented forest fires for the forest service, certain settlements were permitted to continue to exist in the restricted forests. These were subsequently referred to as ‘forest villages’. Other village residents were uprooted without warning or compensation. Increasing land rents and repeated requests for free labour and supplies from colonial officials have long been a source of pain for the locals. Then followed the severe famines, which struck again in 1907–1908 and 1899–1900. The final straw turned out to be reservations.
