The Kalangs of Java is known as the community of skilled forest clutters. It would have been impossible to harvest teak and erect the monarchs' palaces without their knowledge. The 6000 Kalang families were divided evenly between the two kingdoms when the Mataram kingdom was partitioned in 1755. When the Dutch took control of the woodlands, they attempted to make Kalangs work for them. The Kalangs rescinded their surrender and assaulted the Dutch fort at Joana. Surontiko Samin of Randublatung village, a teak forest community, began disputing the state's ownership of forests around 1890. His sons-in-law and over 3000 families helped him.
