The textiles of Surat were famous during the Mughal period. The hub of western trade during the Mughal era was Surat in Gujarat. Trade with West Asia across the Gulf of Ormuz entered at Surat. Because so many pilgrim ships leave from here, Surat has often been referred to as the gateway to Mecca. Cotton textiles were also sold in a number of retail and wholesale stores. The textiles from Surat were well-known for having borders with gold lace (zari), and they were popular in West Asia, Africa, and Europe.
