The devsari, dand, or man is the small fee paid by a village to another village to use their wood.
The people of Bastar believe that the earth gave each village its land, and in return, they care for the earth by making offerings at each agricultural festival. They honour the spirits of the river, the forest, and the mountain in addition to the earth. Because each village is aware of its boundaries, the locals take care of all natural resources within those boundaries. People from one village pay a small fee, called devsari, dand, or man, to take wood from the forests of another village.
