Detailed Solution

The Vernacular press act curbed the freedom of the press.
It was the Vernacular press act that curbed the freedom of the press. The vernacular Press Act was passed under British rule in the year 1878 and was enacted to silence the people who were critical of British rule and government and against people who spoke against the brutal British raj. With the imposition of this act, the government got the right to confiscate the assets of newspapers and also their printing presses if they publish any news, article or editorial against the British government. The newspaper could also be confiscated if the publication seemed to be ‘objectionable’ to the British government. This act was passed in the same year as the Arms Act and this played a crucial role in intensifying the Indian dissatisfaction with British rule.
