For the jute producers of Bengal, their predicament was brought on by the 1929 Great Depression. The farmers produced raw jute, processed in factories and exported as gunny bags. However, as gunny exports declined, the price of raw jute dropped by more than 60%. Due to ever-lower prices, peasants who borrowed in the hopes of better times or to expand output to earn more money found themselves in a never-ending cycle of debt.
