The Gomasthas provided loans for the weavers to purchase the raw material for their production.
Gomasthas, advantageous for the Britishers, proved to be a painful experience for the weavers. Although weavers could not get the raw materials purchased at the time of crisis, Gomasthas helped them. Gomasthas tend to provide loans to the weavers for the same purpose. The British colonial government asked Gomasthas to do so. But these loans, instead of being a useful measure, become the reason for their misery. Gomasthas were providing loans at very high interest. These interests were so high that weavers could not repay these loans on time. So Gomasthas then ill-treated weavers by punishing them severely.
