The Muslim religion has Shias and Sunnis. An argument about who should succeed the Islamic prophet Muhammad as caliph of the Islamic community is the root of the history of tensions between Shia and Sunnis. When Muhammad passed away in 632, some Muslims—who would later be referred to as Sunnis—thought that Abu Bakr should have been his successor, while others—who would later be referred to as Shias—thought Ali should have been the rightful successor. In Iran, Azerbaijan, Iraq, Bahrain, and roughly 65% of the Muslim population overall, Shias are the majority (around 60%of the citizens, excluding expatriates). According to the UNHCR, there are also Shia communities in Yemen, where a sizable portion of the population is Shia (mainly Zaidi). According to sources, Yemen has between 25 and 30% of Shia residents.
