The primary sector was the largest producing sector in 1970-71. The share of the primary sector in the GDP in 1973-74 was 40%. The primary sector provides employment mainly in the form of unorganized labour, but it engages 55% of the total population of India. Since most of the natural products are obtained from these, this sector is also known as the "agricultural and related sector". It is the most labour-intensive sector that hires many casual labourers. The primary sector is the basic tier of economic activity. It is based upon the rearing and cultivation of natural products. They can be transformed into whole new substances later with the help of manufacturing processes.
