The gomasthas supervised the weavers under British rule in India. Gomasthas was appointed by British officials. They were Indian agents for the British East India Company and had signed contracts with craftsmen and local weavers to supply the company, often without consent and by force. The gomasthas set the prices of the products. They collected supplies from the weavers and evaluated the fabric standards. They are known to be greedy and any delay or unsatisfactory response from the weavers was handled by brutal punishment. Such circumstances gave birth to animosity between Gomasthas and Weavers.
