Dedicated to Shiva, the Kandariya Mahadeva temple was constructed in 999 by king Dhangadeva of the Chandela dynasty. The temple was designed so that an ornamented gateway led to an entrance and the main hall (maha mandapa), where dances were performed. The image of the chief deity was kept in the main shrine (garbhagriha). The place for ritual worship was Garbhagriha, where only the king, his immediate family, and priests gathered. Commoners were not allowed entry into the Khajuraho complex, which contained royal temples. Carved sculptures adorn the temples.
