Detailed Solution

The calico textile was produced in Calicut in the 18th century. The Indian textiles, through their names, represent the history of the fabric. The Indian materials were of acceptable quality and were in huge demand in Europe. Calico is a fine variety of cotton. It was produced in the region of Calicut, in Kerala. The Portuguese came to India for spices. When they returned, they took the cotton variety from Kerala. They called it calico, as it was produced in Calicut. Calico, thus, came to be used as a common name for all the varieties of cotton textiles. However, in the 18th century, the Calico Act banned printed cotton textiles in England to provide impetus to local industries.
