The Agarias was a community of iron smelters. The Agarias in British India specialised in the art and crafts of smelting iron. Iron smelting was done in furnaces built with clay and sun-dried bricks in numerous villages in India. The Agarias lived mainly in the villages of states or territories like Bihar and other parts of Central India and were mainly smelters by profession. They declined after the Industrial Revolution in Britain as industry-manufactured steel started being imported into India, and its use grew in making utensils and weapons. S this led to the deterioration of the smelting industry.
