Detailed Solution

The Acland Mill was the first jute mill to open in India. This mill was founded in Rishra, Bengal Presidency, British India, in 1855 by British businessman George Acland and Bengali banker Babu Bysumber Sen. It was built near the Hooghly River in Kolkata. In those times, Kolkata was the greatest spot to start a jute mill because the raw resources for jute manufacture were available nearby. Additionally, there was plenty of labour and coal for power, and the city was conveniently located for shipping to international markets. Thus, by the end of 1869, five mills had been erected, with 950 looms in operation.
