Detailed Solution

The Diamond Sutra was the oldest Japanese printed book.
The Buddhist Diamond Sutra, which has six sheets of text and woodcut pictures, is the earliest Japanese book published in AD 868. This book is essentially one of the most influential Mahayana Sutras in Buddhism. In China, books were produced by rubbing paper against the inked surface of woodblocks starting in AD 594. Then, around AD 768–770, Chinese Buddhist missionaries brought hand-printing techniques to Japan. As a result, textiles, playing cards, and paper money all had pictures printed on the Diamond Sutra.
