The Kalangs of Java were a community of skilled forest cutters and shifting cultivators in Java.
The 6,000 Kalang families were so valuable that they were divided evenly between the two kingdoms when the Mataram kingdom of Java split in 1755. Without their knowledge, it would have been challenging for the monarchs to construct their palaces and gather teak. In the eighteenth century, as the Dutch started to take over the woodlands, they attempted to subjugate the Kalanga. The Kalangs tried to rebel in 1770 by attacking a Dutch fort at Joana, but the revolt was put down.
