The Europeans were attracted to Africa due to its abundant land and natural resources in the 19th century. Africa had a small population that was engaged in livestock rearing. Europeans were attracted to the huge land and mineral resources. They wanted to establish plantations and mines in the region to acquire economic gains through exports. They established their colonies over the regions. But they faced a shortage of wage labourers as land and livestock sustained the natives. They made laws for attaining wage labour. High taxes could only be paid by working on mines and plantations for wages. Due to changes in inheritance laws, which only permitted one family member to inherit the land and forced the other members into the labour force, peasants were forced off their land and into the cities.
